Bikes are put together in a verythereis many parts that are needed to make the bike work ut some are just extra weight. Bikes work in a certain way that makes them move right, and although they can break, it usually isn't very common. Over the years bikes have become less and less complex so that they are easy to build and customize.
Bikes couldn't move without the chain. The chain makes it so that the brakes and wheels work properly so that the bike doesn't just stop when you are trying to move. You may notice that as you move the wheels of your bike, the chain moves. The brakes make it so you can easily stop and work together with the chain. The brakes make the wheels stop moving and so you can't pedal.
The chain also makes the pedals work. When your pedals move the chain moves causing your wheels to move. You'll notice that if you pedal backwards you can hear your chain creaking, that is because the chain can't move the wheels backwards. There is many wire like materials connecting your brakes to your tire, you'll notice. Those wires create tension onto the wheel causing it to stop moving.
